SUMMARY:Food Foraging with Green Deane: 12th Annual Urban Crawl
DESCRIPTION:My annual Urban Crawl is coming up\, my twelfth\, on Friday\, December 23rd in Winter Park. \nMy Urban Crawl is a free class. We meet in front of Panera’s at 10 a.m. We wander south to the college\, stop at Starbucks\, go east to the public library area\, then back to Panera’s. It is wheelchair friendly. \nBEGINNING POINT: Panera’s in Winter Park where we start and finish the Urban Crawl. \n“A reasonable question is what about foraging in a city? There is some surprising research. Dan Brabaner is a geoscience professor at Wellesley College\, Boston. With some undergraduate students they studied preserved food collected from fruit trees and the like in the urban Boston area. What they found was cherries\, apples\, peaches and herbs were relatively low in lead and arsenic. That is\, a serving had less amounts of these toxins than the allowed daily amount for a child. The team also did not find a significant difference between peeled and unpeeled fruit. The fruit was low in toxic chemical because they are the furthest away from any toxins in the soil. This would apply to tree nuts as well. Leafy greens faired well\, too\, because they grow fast and 1) don’t have time to accumulate toxins and 2) most air pollution on them can be washed off. Brabander also analyzed foraged food from plants growing in the urban environment not growing on agricultural soil. These foods had higher micronutrients because they were not growing on worn-out agricultural soil. Calcium and iron were higher as were manganese\, zinc\, magnesium and potassium. Thus we know that not only do “weeds” pack more of a nutritional punch because they are wild but also because they can be growing in better soil.”

SUMMARY:QUINCENTENNIAL CELEBRATION GREAT FLORIDA CATTLE DRIVE 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Drive will be from December 4 – 10th.  The Drive will cover Old Florida-style land in central Florida\, including Deseret Ranch\, which is the largest ranch in Florida.  Also\, we will traverse the beautiful Kempfer Ranch in Deer Park. \nOur starting point will be at the Kirchman Foundation’s Lake X Ranch near St. Cloud and the Drive will end at the Silver Spurs Practice Arena in Kenansville.  The Drive is not visible from roads\, so there will be no spectators of the actual drive (spectators are invited to join as at the Trail’s End Frolic though to see the “Cows come home”). \nA truly memorable experience of Old Florida and the Cow Culture ways.  This will be a historic event as we drive 1000 head of Cracker style cattle through scenic central Florida cattle country.  We will be on the trail for 6-7 days and will end with a big Trail’s End Celebration Frolic. \nParticipants will divided into “Circles”\,  each managed by a Circle Boss and assistants.  You will ride with your circle\, and will have the opportunity for your circle to help the Cow Hunters push the herd on specific days. \nEach day we will ride and drive the herd around 10-15 miles\, so expect to spend most all day riding – rain or shine. \nYour meals will be provided and your gear moved for you to each night’s camp.  Grain\, hay and water will provided for the horses.  You will be primitive camping each night. \nEach evening there will be family fun entertainment – Cracker storytellers\, cowboy poetry\, music\, and a favorite\, Seminole night\, where members from the tribe will come share their culture with us. \nRegistration is Required.  Visit website for more information.
