SUMMARY:30th Annual Organic Growers School Spring Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Organic Growers School is excited to announce the 30th Anniversary of its flagship event\, the Spring Conference\, to be held at Mars Hill University\, Mars Hill\, NC\, February 24-26\, 2023. The anniversary conference and associated special events will continue the organization’s mission to support\, inspire and educate people to farm\, garden\, and live organically by providing affordable\, practical\, and hands-on education while offering the opportunity to celebrate the non-profit’s legacy in the region over these past three decades. \nThe Spring Conference happens over three days\, with the preceding Friday dedicated to day-long workshops at off-campus sites around Western North Carolina. Over the weekend\, we offer around 60 90-minute workshops organized into 15 themed tracks\, such as Mushrooms\, Herbs\, Gardening\, Farming\, and Sustainable Living. There will also be over ten half-day workshops that provide opportunities to get more hands-on experience with topics such as fermentation\, backyard chickens\, and spirulina cultivation. Alongside all of these wonderful educational workshops\, the Conference will also feature a lively Exhibit Hall full of local vendors\, our annual Seed and Plant Exchange\, fun networking opportunities\, local food trucks\, and more! \nNote: Online registration will close on February 19th at midnight. Walk-in registrations are available\, but sliding scale pricing will not be offered on site.

SUMMARY:Winter Count: A Primitive Skills Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Winter Count is a primitive skills gathering that has been taking place every February since 1995 in the stunning Sonoran desert of southern Arizona. Founded by Dave and Paula Wescott\, Winter Count is one of the preeminent gatherings of its kind. Instructors and students spend one week together sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge of skills such as fire making\, archery\, basketry\, hide tanning\, pottery\, flintknapping\, and much more. Winter Count is known for the high quality of its instructors and small class sizes. \nWinter Count is a “conference” style event that was started for instructors and people in the field of primitive living skills\, experimental archeology and survival skills to come together\, spend time with their peers sharing knowledge\, offering their skills and having a good time. Instructors at Winter Count are not paid but instead receive compensation from networking we facilitate during the year\, sharing what they have learned\, and giving them a place to have a week off from their normal schedules. You will also have the opportunity to buy their wares\, products\, books\, etc. \nThe next event will take place FEBRUARY 19-25\, 2023. Five hundred people\, including students\, instructors\, and camp staff\, camp together\, share meals\, teach\, learn\, tell stories\, and play music around the campfire. Many of the folks who come to this gathering have been attending for many years\, bringing their kids to what has become for them a “family reunion.” \nWe are a diverse group of people from many experiences\, opinions\, family backgrounds\, and levels of expertise who come together to share what it is that makes us excited about life. You may find yourself around people that don’t share your political\, spiritual or life views.   \nWinter Count is held about a 30 minute drive east of Florence\, AZ. Whether you have been to Winter Count before or not\, you will want to read ALL the materials we send so you can be fully prepared for the week. \nThe site (elevation 2600 ft) has a beautiful view of the Superstition Mountains\, stunning night skies and no neighbors. Due to dense desert vegetation\, we will ask you to park in designated areas and not park in  areas where vegetation is growing. We get kinda persnickety about this. Also\, Check-in happens at the gate and check-in hours are restricted so make sure you are aware when you will or will not be able to enter camp. See the Camp Schedule for entry times. \nLocal flora ranges from palo verde and ironwood to saguaro and barrel cactus. The adage that “Everything in the desert sticks\, pricks\, bites\, and stings” is more fact than fiction. Catclaw\, mesquite\, jumping cholla\, and other pricklies are regular residents. Animal life ranges from toads to javalinas\, deer to tortoises\, fox\, bobcat\, and much more. \nTo get news and updates on Winter Count (AZ) sign up for our newsletter HERE. \nWinter Count is a drug\, alcohol\, and firearm free events.

SUMMARY:Food Foraging with Green Deane: 12th Annual Urban Crawl
DESCRIPTION:My annual Urban Crawl is coming up\, my twelfth\, on Friday\, December 23rd in Winter Park. \nMy Urban Crawl is a free class. We meet in front of Panera’s at 10 a.m. We wander south to the college\, stop at Starbucks\, go east to the public library area\, then back to Panera’s. It is wheelchair friendly. \nBEGINNING POINT: Panera’s in Winter Park where we start and finish the Urban Crawl. \n“A reasonable question is what about foraging in a city? There is some surprising research. Dan Brabaner is a geoscience professor at Wellesley College\, Boston. With some undergraduate students they studied preserved food collected from fruit trees and the like in the urban Boston area. What they found was cherries\, apples\, peaches and herbs were relatively low in lead and arsenic. That is\, a serving had less amounts of these toxins than the allowed daily amount for a child. The team also did not find a significant difference between peeled and unpeeled fruit. The fruit was low in toxic chemical because they are the furthest away from any toxins in the soil. This would apply to tree nuts as well. Leafy greens faired well\, too\, because they grow fast and 1) don’t have time to accumulate toxins and 2) most air pollution on them can be washed off. Brabander also analyzed foraged food from plants growing in the urban environment not growing on agricultural soil. These foods had higher micronutrients because they were not growing on worn-out agricultural soil. Calcium and iron were higher as were manganese\, zinc\, magnesium and potassium. Thus we know that not only do “weeds” pack more of a nutritional punch because they are wild but also because they can be growing in better soil.”
